2021 World Tour Team Application List: Circus–Wanty Gobert is under review, NTT may withdraw

Last Friday, UCI announced the list of professional teams registered for the 2021 season. There are many changes in the list.

It is worth noting that the Belgian Circus–Wanty Gobert team has purchased the CCC team’s World Tour license, and UCI is currently under review. The South African NTT team did not appear on the list because they are still looking for new sponsors.

There are 18 World Tour teams in the 2021 roster, and NTT team boss Doug Ryde said on Thursday that since the Japanese technology company NTT did not extend the sponsorship agreement, he hopes the new financial support will ensure the team continues into its 13th season. However, even with sufficient financial support, the team seems to have to downgrade in 2021.

"UCI hopes that teams that are not on this list may still be able to complete their applications before the end of the registration process." UCI pointed out in a statement.

Regarding the rest of the teams, the AG2R La Mondiale team will be renamed AG2R Citroen, and after the British racing brand McLaren withdraws its sponsorship, the Bahrain McLaren team will be renamed the Bahrain Victory Team.

The name of the Mitchelton-Scott team was changed back to the GreenEdge Cycling team. The EF Education First Pro Cycling team remains unchanged, despite rumors that Japanese construction company Nippo will join its sponsors.

Among the second-level teams, the Eolo-Kometa team operated by Contador and Ivan Bass and the Spanish Equipo Kern Pharma team have been upgraded to intercontinental professional teams. However, the Riwal Securitas team is not on the list. According to reports, the Danish team has applied for an extension to UCI because the team is dealing with financial issues.

As for the women's World Tour team, it seems that by 2021, it will increase from 8 to 9 teams. The final list of license applications for the World Tour Team and Intercontinental Professional Team is expected to be confirmed in December.
